Is CBD Legal for Dogs? Hemp, THC Limits, and What Pet Owners Should Know

CBD’s legal status is one of the most commonly misunderstood parts of buying a product for your pet — partly because “CBD” covers a wide range of products with very different legal footing depending on the source and THC content. Here’s the short, accurate version.

Hemp-derived CBD vs. marijuana-derived CBD

The 2018 Farm Bill federally legalized hemp — defined as cannabis containing no more than 0.3% THC by dry weight — and removed it from the list of controlled substances. CBD extracted from compliant hemp is federally legal in the U.S. as a result. CBD sourced from marijuana plants (cannabis exceeding that 0.3% THC threshold) is a different legal category entirely and is regulated at the state level, inconsistently, and is not the type of product marketed for pets.

Virtually every legitimate pet CBD brand — including ours — sources exclusively from hemp, specifically because it’s the legally compliant path.

Legal does not automatically mean FDA-approved

This is the part that trips people up: hemp-derived CBD being federally legal to sell is a separate question from whether the FDA has approved it as an animal drug or evaluated specific health claims about it. It hasn’t, for any brand. That’s why credible pet CBD companies market their products as supplements and describe general wellness support rather than making disease-treatment claims — a distinction that matters both legally and for your own judgment as a buyer. Any pet CBD brand promising to “cure,” “treat,” or “prevent” a specific diagnosed condition is overstating what current regulation actually allows them to claim.

What to look for as a buyer

A few markers separate a compliant, transparent CBD product from one worth being cautious about:

• Sourced from hemp, not marijuana, with THC compliant at or below 0.3% — or, ideally, an isolate-based formula with 0% THC
• Third-party lab testing with a Certificate of Analysis available for the specific batch you’re buying
• Supplement-appropriate marketing language — general wellness support, not specific disease claims
• Clear sourcing information — where the hemp was grown and processed
