0% THC CBD for Dogs: Why THC-Free Matters and How to Verify It

If you’re considering a CBD product for your dog or cat, the single most important label detail isn’t the CBD milligram count — it’s the THC content. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound in cannabis, and it is toxic to dogs and cats even in small amounts. Understanding what a label actually promises here matters more than almost anything else on it.

“Less than 0.3% THC” is not the same as 0% THC

Under federal hemp regulations, a product can be legally labeled “hemp-derived” if it contains less than 0.3% THC by dry weight. A lot of pet CBD products use full-spectrum or broad-spectrum hemp extract that falls under this threshold — which is compliant, but it is not zero. It means trace THC is present in every dose. For a 90-pound Labrador, that trace amount is unlikely to matter much. For an 8-pound cat or a small senior dog, repeated trace exposure is a different calculation.

What “full-spectrum,” “broad-spectrum,” and “isolate” actually mean

• Full-spectrum extract contains the complete range of naturally occurring cannabinoids in the hemp plant, including trace THC.
• Broad-spectrum extract has THC specifically removed after extraction, but the process isn’t always complete or independently verified batch to batch.
• Isolate refers to a single cannabinoid extracted and purified on its own — CBD isolate, for example, contains only CBD, with no THC and no other cannabinoids, because nothing else survives the isolation process.

Only an isolate-based formulation can honestly claim 0.00% THC, because it’s a function of the extraction method, not a marketing claim layered on top of a full or broad-spectrum base.

How to actually verify it

Any legitimate CBD product — for pets or people — should have a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from an independent, third-party lab. A real COA will show:

1. Confirmed CBD (and CBG, if applicable) potency per batch
2. THC content, ideally reported as “non-detectable” rather than just “under 0.3%”
3. Screening for contaminants like heavy metals, pesticides, and residual solvents

If a brand can’t produce a current COA for the exact batch you’re buying, that’s a meaningful gap — not just a formality.
