CBD vs. CBG for Pets: What's the Difference and Why Give Both?

CBD and CBG are chemically distinct

Both CBD and CBG are non-psychoactive cannabinoids found in the hemp plant — neither produces the “high” associated with THC. But they’re structurally different compounds that interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system in different ways. In fact, CBG is sometimes called the “mother cannabinoid,” because CBGA (its acidic precursor) is the compound from which the plant synthesizes CBDA and THCA as it matures. By the time most hemp is harvested, CBG is present in much smaller quantities than CBD — which is part of why CBD-only products are so much more common than CBD+CBG formulations.

Why the distinction matters for your pet

Because CBD and CBG engage with the endocannabinoid system differently, researchers and formulators increasingly view them as complementary rather than redundant. CBG is more expensive to isolate at scale than CBD, and because it occurs in smaller natural quantities in the hemp plant, it requires more raw material to extract a meaningful, standardized amount.
