Wild Arctic cod, by contrast, live and feed in open cold-water environments. Their oil reflects that: a naturally occurring balance of EPA and DHA built up over a wild diet, not a farmed one.

Why cold water matters

Fish that live in cold water produce more omega-3 fatty acids as a natural adaptation — it keeps their cell membranes flexible at low temperatures. Cod from Arctic waters are about as cold-water as it gets, which is part of why cod liver oil has such a concentrated EPA and DHA profile compared to oil from warmer-water or farmed species.

What to check on a label

1. Is it liver oil or body oil? Only liver oil carries the naturally occurring vitamin A and D content.
2. Wild-caught or farm-raised? The label should say. If it doesn’t, that’s usually because the answer is farm-raised.
3. Is anything added to mask the smell? Real cod liver oil has a distinct natural scent. Artificial bacon, turkey, or coconut flavoring is often there to cover up a lower-quality oil underneath.
